Many marketers and brands still don’t recognize the potentials of push notifications as an advertising tool because it is unfamiliar to them.

Many argue that push notifications are intrusive and annoying; however, the statistics say otherwise.

In a survey conducted by Localytics, more than half of the respondents said that push notifications are good as long as it is relevant to their online preferences and behaviors.

Forty-nine percent of the respondents also said that push notifications encourage them to use the app more.

This study also shows that eCommerce apps increased their engagements up to 278% because of push notifications.

Push notifications are undoubtedly effective advertising tools as long as you know how to use it right.

Here are some ways to take advantage of push notification ads:

1. Your push ads should be timely

Push ads can be annoying because of poor scheduling. Your audience will ignore  your brand message if you send your push ads while they sleep .

Take into consideration the time zones of your target audience: understand when they are least busy, when they often use their devices, and when they usually travel.

Schedule your ads on times where they can most likely engage with your ad.

2. Relevance is important

You also need to pay attention to your ads’ relevance to the target audience.

Only display ads to those who will most likely respond or take an interest in your brand or product.

Before you look for your target audience, study your own brand first. What is your brand all about? What are your campaign goals?

Afterwards, look for potential audience who maybe interested in your campaign.

If you own an iOS mobile gaming app, then you should only target iOS users.

With your mobile game’s features, what type of connection should you target? If your mobile game is heavy, then you can target iOS users with 4G and WiFi connection only.

Strategize your campaigns. Put yourself in the shoes of your target audience and analyze what campaigns are relevant and appealing.

3. Connect to your audience, not to their devices

One of the reasons users tend to turn-off push notifications is they don’t relate to it at all.

Personalization of push ads, therefore, is a very important push ads strategy for your target audience to notice and engage with your ads.

According to Dynamicyield, one highly-effective method to personalize your push ads is to send recommendations and reminders based on your audience’s previous online activities or purchases.

If you own a video streaming app,  you can send recommendations based on their watch history. For online shopping brands, you can send them deals or coupons related to their search history.

You can also add some emojis in your ads to avoid being promotive.

Random and general messages won’t work if you want high engagements. Study your audience’s online behavior so that you will know the kind of content you should send to them.

4. Analyze your engagement stats

Your campaign doesn’t end as soon as you execute it.

Advertising isn’t just about creating a plan and waiting for the positive to happen. You also need to analyze and monitor the results and data you gathered.

Point out what kind of notifications have the highest engagements, determine what time of the day they usually engage, and analyze what makes them engage with your ad.

This is important to understand whether you should continue with your campaign or not.

5. Recreate your campaign if you must

If you haven’t reached your campaign goals after a while, it is time for you to change it.

Study what went wrong in your campaign, and try to innovate ways to generate engagements.

Online advertising is mainly a trial-and-error method. You can try to test a different set of messages at a certain amount of time. Examine what works, and improve where you can and refine your strategies often.

You can easily perform these methods once you have access to a demand-side platform (DSP). Through a DSP, you can plan and execute your push ads to your brand’s advantage.
